NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard, Clinton High school and Saraland High School conduct a commissioning ceremony for the first Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps units in Mississippi and Alabama, Wednesday and Thursday morning.
The Coast Guard JROTC program aims to inspire and develop young leaders by instilling the values of teamwork, discipline, and service to the community. This initiative will provide high school students with a unique opportunity to explore careers in the Coast Guard and gain valuable leadership skills that will benefit them in their future endeavors.
During the event, Rear Adm. Will Watson outlined the program’s objectives, curriculum, and the benefits it offers to participating students. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the Coast Guard’s mission, its role in safeguarding our nation’s maritime interests, and the numerous career paths available within the organization.
The Coast Guard established its first JROTC unit in 1992, in Miami. Under recent federal legislation, the Coast Guard is expanding the JROTC program to every Coast Guard District by 2025. The Clinton and Saraland High School JROTC program, activated in November of 2023, marks the first two units in Coast Guard District Eight.
The Mobile Council of the Navy League of the Unites States presented two awards today at the Mobile Chamber of Commerce Military Appreciation Luncheon. The Hugh Casteix Award was presented to BM1 Ryan Owens of the USCG Gulf Strike Team. The RADM J. Lloyd Abbot award was given to ET2 Ryan Reid of the USS AUGUSTA (LCS 34) Blue Crew. Congratulations and job well done.
The Navy League of the United States recognizes local councils each year with the Mackie Award for their communications efforts. This year the Mobile Council received a Silver Award for social media posts. The criteria for this award include frequency, quality of posts, timeliness, subject matter, use of imagery, original content, and use of methods of engagement.
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -The Mobile Council of the Navy League is celebrating the Navy’s 247th birthday. The central theme of this year is “On Watch – 24/7 for 247 Years,” which highlights our Navy’s enduring ability to remain fully ready to respond to and effectively deter emergent threats.
The Mobile Council of the Navy League is looking for male and female adult volunteer assistance to help the leadership of the Dunlap Division of the Sea Cadets. Sea Cadets are High School-age young adults. Prior or current military experience is desired but not a necessity. The amount of your time is up to you. Desire to help youth is required. The traveling exhibit, So Ready for Laughter: The Legacy of Bob Hope has arrived at GulfQuest and will be docked on Deck 1 through 7 March 2022. Credit for this enjoyable display goes to the National Touring Sponsor: The Bob & Delores Hope Foundation. It is presented by The National WWII Museum and hosted by GulfQuest, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, and our local sponsors: Mobile Council of the Navy League of the United States, Page & Jones, Mama’s on Dauphin, and the Community Foundation of South Alabama. Admission to the Museum including this exhibit is free for Veterans and Military Families through the month of November.
